Review from Alameda Sun, Newspaper, October, 2011
THE CIRCLE GAME  Played at the Frank Bette Center   by Karen Braun Malpas

Circles and spheres, globes and discs are in abundance this time around at the Frank Bette Centers current show.  The circle is a pleasing, welcoming shape. Consider the congenial, egalitarian implications of dinner served on a round table versus a rectangular one.

As one enters the gallery, one is greeted by Larry Berger's large sculpture made of recycled wood which, in itself, represents a kind of circle, that of re-use. It features a hole which serves as a window or keyhole to frame what is beyond, drawing us into and through.

Beyond, we find Fred Fago's photo of a "Porthole", a huge window, in a dimly lit interior, onto a blazing blue world teeming with sea life, gyrating to its own rhythms while a student or scholar stands earnestly nearby taking notes.

Zan Blood Walker also shows a photo featuring a blue circle, "Blue Juxtapoz", which is a star flower at once demure and aggressive-looking.

Francesca Roccaforte exhibits a number of lushly-colored photos including "Mother Guadalupe" which takes us into a humble interior housing an informal altar. There, the walls are a turquoise so clear and vibrant they are nearly a charge of spearmint to the eyes.

Sandra Adams shows a painting of industrious people tending their "Dye Pots", the orifice of which is naturally a circle providing entry to the color within. Similarly, Andy Crockett's serene little painting of "Vessels" encourages us to contemplate the circular volume of the void within. Paul Feinberg's joyful paintings of golden sunflowers serve as more lightbulbs within the gallery.

Karen Friedman shows a delicate "Yarn Composition." As a monotype, she rolled ink on the circle of yarn once and pulled only one impression off it making it related but dissimilar to the world of printmaking with its capacity for multiple originals. This textured circle evokes a welcome wreath on the door or a festive crown worn by the Queen of the May.

Understated and poetic images on silk are the work of Fado Ivery.  Their power is in whispering and haunting.

Not to be missed are the ceramic works of Kenneth Brown. Some are impressively massive, wheel thrown and gunmetal in color.  Their light-hearted clay cousins are white and cobalt blue. The many little pieces are shaped and embellished differently but are displayed together so the result is like the discoveries in a tidal pool or a garden.  Each can stand alone aesthetically but, in combination, they support and enhance each other.

Francesca's Statement on Autumn leaves series exhibited at Studio One in  March, 2011
"The changing of the seasons is nature's cycle of transformation.
The harvest of fall, the leaves on trees turning brilliant reds, oranges and yellows is indeed a wondrous event. It fills me with awe and gratitude, excites all of my senses! I look forward to "leaf peeping", traveling to certain locations that are especially colorful and capturing the majestic colors of fall with my camera each fall season."
